Women Talking (Knopf)

I am thrilled to present these three illustrations for the novel Women Talking by the brilliant Miriam Toews.

From the online write-up: Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons," Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events.

The entire book is a single conversation had between the women of the colony in a hayloft. In this secret meeting they come to terms with what is happening to them and debate three choices: stay and keep quiet, stay and fight, or leave.

These illustrations appeared on the frontispiece of the original edition by Knopf Canada and were also bought for the UK and Commonwealth, US, German and Italian editions.
